Abstract

The twenty-first century is undergoing a structural crisis of meaning: human experience is transforming faster than we can interpret it. Informational acceleration (Hilbert & López, 2011; Han, 2015), algorithmic fragmentation (Cinelli et al., 2021), and institutional erosion (OECD, 2021) generate a growing gap between action and understanding that manifests as individual exhaustion, institutional incoherence, and cultural sensitivity to noise.

This desynchronization does not imply an absence of meaning, but rather the loss of the rhythm that makes it possible. Meaning operates as a structural function that integrates information, experience, and values through hierarchization, coherence, orientation, rhythm, and narrativity. When these functions weaken, the symbolic architecture that sustains understanding begins to fracture.

Generative artificial intelligence intensifies this tension: it accelerates the production and circulation of language without contributing genuine understanding (Maslej et al., 2024), exposing human interpretive limits and raising the question of whether technical mediations that accompany meaning-making are —or will soon be— indispensable, as long as they do not replace the human.

In an environment that generates more meanings than we can process, the challenge is not to recover past frameworks or slow life down to older rhythms, but to build sustainable frameworks of meaning: velocities that allow experience to be integrated, languages capable of sustaining disagreement, and institutions coherent in both word and action. A renewed architecture of meaning is essential for preserving orientation, freedom, and coexistence in an age of constant acceleration.
